August Events at Fred Astaire Dance Studio St. Pete Central
It amazes me that I get to come to work every day where everyone is constantly smiling. If you haven’t been to a ballroom dancing studio before I encourage you to just give it a try. I watch each day as our dance students learn this new skill while, smiling and having a great time. The instructors have such a knack for creating a welcoming and safe environment for anyone, at every level of dance experience Sometimes, our students are like butterflies who go through this metamorphosis as they come in shy and unsure then after a couple of lessons, you can see their confidence, posture and overall energy improve. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t watch it with my own eyes. Experiencing ballroom dancing, whether it be swing, salsa, waltz or whatever your forte, it can change your life for the positive. When people ask me what I’ve learned or have been surprised about with my job at the Tampa Bay dance studios, I tell them I see transformations every day. I would agree with the advice from blogger of Biggest Girl in the Ballroom, “if you have a desire in your heart to dance (or anything else in this world for that matter) then do it! Life is a journey and we all have to start somewhere. Dancing, especially, is a process of self-discovery, experimentation, and a practice. I think it is incredibly sad when we limit ourselves or deny ourselves experiences due to perceived shortcomings and it is really a matter of choosing to engage in life, to say yes and risk it, or to say no, and slowly waste away. Courage is not the absence of fear but rather getting on with it anyway in the face of it. And that is where the growth is, outside our comfort zone.” The studio is under new Management and we would love to have you join or come back to our new growing dance family. My Ballroom Dancing Experience - Renee Carpenter
Hi! I’m Renee Carpenter the new Director of Marketing at Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Tampa and St. Pete and now….. the newest blogger. As my bio will tell you, my background has been in Corporate America and the Auto Auction Business. Talk about getting out of your comfort zone! No, I’m not a ballroom dancer. Sure, I’ve had plenty of fun on the dance floor in the clubs after a few martinis or goofing with my girls to the latest hip hop song in the kitchen (please note, the YouTube Video of “Mom Twerking by the Fridge” has been removed, thank heavens). But the art of ballroom dancing with a partner is almost foreign to me. I say almost foreign because I took ballroom dance lessons along with my wedding party 20+ years ago. A dear friend had the foresight to offer a bridal dance lessons as an early wedding gift. Growing up as a GRIT (girl raised in the south), I knew I wanted an elegant dance floor scene for my ideal wedding, but would possibly get stuck with nothing but really bad line dancing, and a few aunts and uncles who knew the basics of ballroom dancing. As for my groom, he had never stepped foot on ANY dance floor and only went along with ballroom dance lessons because I convinced him it was the “only” thing I really wanted to be perfect. Well, we didn’t exactly get perfection. Yet our first dance, after four ballroom dance lessons, stunned our guests into believing we had practiced for months. What I did get perfect was the Father of the Bride Dance. I tear up just thinking about it as I write this blog. My Step Father was very ill at the time and we weren’t sure he would even be able to walk me down the aisle. But he was determined to do just that and to dance with the bride, his baby girl. He was a large man and prided himself on his waltz. Before taking Ballroom Dancing lessons, I had never waltzed before unless you count the two-step at Cowboys country bar in Orlando. When I stepped on the dance floor with my Dad I felt like a princess in the arms of her father, the king. He knew all the steps, was strong yet graceful and gentle as we floated across the floor. We were having our final dance before I would begin my life with my Prince. My Dad has been gone for 16 years now. While we all get emotional over the wedding Father Daughter Dance, I’m taken to a magical moment each time I think about that time or watch the home video. We were two souls from completely different generations, in completely different physical shape, going in completely different directions in our lives, yet for one single dance we shared something we were both proud of and that no one else could replicate that day. Ballroom dancing lessons gave me so much more than technique on how to waltz. It gave me the most precious memory I will keep of my Dad. It also gave me a feeling that with the a little help, anyone, at any point in their life can feel graceful and royal when they learn to dance. I’m filled with curiosity and excitement as I watch our diverse group of dance students from all walks of life learn to dance and improving their dancing skills. Everyone comes looking for personal fulfillment, some with a partner, but I know they will all leave with an extraordinary experience that will create happy memories for life. I would love to hear your story about how dance lessons have impacted your life! What brought you to Fred Astaire Dance Studios? Leave your comments and help us grow our online Tampa Bay Fred Astaire Dance Studio family.
